Both sections were enjoyable and made for a nice scenic experience in the Hudson River Valley. It stretches about 10 miles (16 km) along the boundary between Rockland and Westchester counties, downstream from Croton Point to Irvington. We hiked as far as the Lyndhurst mansion on this rustic path. The Tappan Zee is a natural widening of the Hudson River, about 3 miles (4.8 km) across at its widest, in southeastern New York. It was quiet, except for passing trains, with some change in elevation, infrequent benches, explanatory signage and even a small waterfall. this was a wooded, mostly uninhabited ramble which paralleled the somewhat busy railroad tracks and the scenic river. The southern portion of the walk was entered off of Van Wart St. Oh yes, lest we forget, the walk ended back at an espresso and ice cream shop on W. Attractive condo's, explanatory signage which explained the vistas or topography/history, telescope observation points, a restaurant and light house defined this portion of the walk. Most of our time in Nyack was spent perusing the many small shops in the downtown area, and then finding a spot along the river to admire the view. We arrived just before the Edward Hopper House closed, so I made myself content with just a few photos of the exterior. Nyack is connected to Tarrytown by the Tappan Zee Bridge, which crosses the Hudson River. The Irving plot at Sleepy Hollow Cemetery A nice drive then a few snapshots and we were on our way. I had one goal and one goal only: to see the grave of the author of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." One path followed the river, but the other was more inland and secluded. We walked along the trails, shielding ourselves as best we could from the smiting wind whipping along the Hudson. We skipped the tour of this Gothic Revival mansion, designed in 1838, instead opting for a ticket that granted us access only to the extensive grounds. The towns are just minutes from one another and about an hour away by car from Bay Ridge.įirst stop: Tarrytown. This past Memorial Day weekend we decided to fix that by taking a day trip to three Hudson River towns just north of the city: Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow and Nyack. I see it lap against Manhattan's western shore a few times a year, but usually at some distance. For someone who's lived in New York for nearly six years, I've seen surprisingly little of the Hudson River.
